Too many people want others to be their friends, but they don’t give friendship back. That is why some friendships don’t last long. To have a good friend, you must treat your friend in the way you want to be treated. Learning to be a good friend means learning three rules: be honest, be generous and be understanding.
Being honest is the start of a good friendship. Friends must trust each other. If a friend finds out that you are not honest, you may lose your friend’s trust.
Generosity means sharing. You don’t have to give your lunch money or your clothes to your friend, but you can share the things you enjoy—like your hobbies and interests. Naturally you will want to share your ideas and feelings. These can be meaningful to a friend. They show your friend what is important to you. Your friend can know you better by sharing.
Everyone needs to help with a problem. Talking about the problem to a friend can be the first step in solving the problem. So to be a friend, you must listen and understand. You must try to put yourself in your friend’s place so that you can understand the problem better.
No two friendships are the same. But all true friendships have these three things. If you plan to keep your friendships, you must practise being honest, generous and understanding.
