In the forest, a slug(鼻涕虫) moves slowly along a big tree. Behind it leaves something wet that glistens(闪耀) in the sun. But it's not water—it's slime(黏液). Almost every animal wears slime outside or makes slime inside. Although slime might feel a little dirty, we couldn't live without it.
What is slime good for?
Slugs make slime as they move. This helps them go faster and also protect their bodies. A snail's slime is a message to other snails. Frogs coat(用……覆盖) themselves all over in slime, so they don't dry out. A fish's slime coat keeps out salt water. It can also cover cuts.
Could the next great thing start with slime?
All over the world, people are finding surprising new uses of slime. For example, doctors may have found a better way—in a slug, to close up a serious cut. They are making a glue(胶水) which can be used in wet places. It can also move as the body moves. It even fixed(修复) a hole in a pig's heart. They believe in the future, glues like this will be popular. Another use of slime is a kind of friendly sunscreen(防晒霜) from the sea. A group of people have found a sun-blocker(阻断剂) showing up in the slime of fish. So they are trying to use this special slime to make a sea-friendly sunscreen.
