That night, I laid out my clothes, double-checked my backpack, clearly brushed my teeth, and then went to bed. And then I had the strangest dream.
I was walking up to a little schoolhouse when a girl ran past me. “Hurry, or we’ll be late!” she said. “I can’t go any faster,” I said. “I’m already out of breath from walking forever!”
Then I entered a room that had desks, a chalkboard, and a big stove. I looked around nervously and sat down at an empty desk. The teacher at the front of the room said, “Good morning, children.”
“Good morning, Ma’am,” the kids said all together.
“I see we have a new student,” said the teacher. “What is your name?”“Arizona,” I said.
“That’s not a person’s name,” said a boy. “And she’s dressed funny,” said a girl.
That’s when I noticed that all the girls were wearing dresses, and I was wearing jeans! I was still common modern-day me, thrown into the middle of a super-old classroom!
“Please begin your math problems,” said the teacher. The kids all picked up slates and started writing on them with their slate pencils.
“Oops, I messed up!” I said to the girl next to me. “Do you know where the erasers are?” “Here,” she said, handing me a wet rag. “You can use mine.”
Next it was time for chores, and mine was to get water from the well. “Why don’t we just fill our water bottles at a fountain?” I asked. “What’s a fountain?” one boy asked in a low voice.
I felt so out of place! The girl who had shared her rag said, “Come on. I’ll show you where the well is.” We each picked up a bucket and headed outside.
“It’s pretty simple once you get the way of doing it,” she said, lowering the bucket into the well. “By the way, my name is Rosie.”“Wow! I thought you looked familiar,” I said. “You’re my great-great-grandmother!”

She smiled. “A different classroom can seem scary at first, but if you watch, listen, and try your best, I know you’re going to do just fine.”
I have to say, I was pretty relaxed to wake up and find myself in my bedroom! That day, when I got to my new classroom, I was a little nervous. But then I remembered my dream and laughed. Compared to Rosie’s school, this was going to be a piece of cake!
So it’s completely common to be worried when you start a new school, or even just a new grade! There are always different things to get used to. But like Rosie said in my dream, if you watch, listen and try your best, I know you’re going to do just fine!
