二、人生所有的目标都能实现吗?请阅读短文,根据短文内容和你的思考回答问题。
One day, a young man named Mason went to see a wise old man. He wanted to know why he was not able to achieve all of his goals in his life.
The old man was reading in a small house by the river. He listened to Mason's story with a smile and told him, “First, please help me boil a kettle(壶) of water.”
Mason saw a big kettle next to a small stove(火炉), but there was no wood in the house. So he went out to get some.
He came back with some dry wood. He filled the kettle with water and put it on the stove. Then he added some wood to the stove and started a fire. But because the kettle was too big, by the time he had used up all the wood, the water still hadn't boiled. So he ran out to get more.
When he got back, the water had gone cold. He learned his lesson, and this time he got more wood before he started a fire. Finally, he got the water to boil.
“If there is not enough wood, how can you boil the water?” the old man asked. Mason thought for a minute but didn't come up with an answer.
“Well, then just pour some water out of the kettle!” the old man explained. “At first, you set too many goals—just like the big kettle full of
water. You didn't have enough wood, so you couldn't boil the water. If you want to succeed, you will have to boil less water.”
1. Where was the old man reading?
In a small house by the river.

2. What happened after Mason got more wood for the first time?
The water had gone cold.

3. Why couldn't Mason boil the water?
Because the kettle was too big and he didn't have enough wood.

4. 提升题 Do you agree with the wise old man's words about goals? Why or why not?
Yes, I do. If we set too many goals, we may not have the ability or time to make them all come true. It's better to focus on a few important ones.

/ No, I don't. We will have more chances to succeed if we work harder and set more goals.

5. 提升题 What is your goal? How are you going to achieve it?
My goal is to become a professional photographer.

I plan to take online courses in photography in my free time and practise by taking photos every weekend.

I will also share my photos on social media, which can help me improve my skills.

I will work hard and learn more about photography.

1. 定位原文第二段第一句“The old man was reading in a small house by the river.”,直接提取地点信息作答。
2. 定位原文第四段和第五段,第一次取木头后,用完木头水未开,返回时水已凉,据此作答。
3. 定位原文第四段“But because the kettle was too big, by the time he had used up all the wood, the water still hadn't boiled.”,结合上下文可知他未提前准备足够木头,故原因是壶太大且木头不足。
4. 为开放性问题,需围绕“目标设定”,可同意或不同意,说明合理理由即可。
5. 为开放性问题,需明确自身目标,再说明具体实现计划,言之有理即可。
