What began as a hobby has since become a way of life for Konde, who is now the chairman of the university’s Titan Martial Arts Club.
As a child, Konde was fascinated by the skills of martial arts legends like Jackie Chan. When he was admitted to Strathmore University in 2022, his passion for kung fu deepened after joining the martial arts club. Through hard work, he rose to become the club’s chairman, leading his team to victories in national martial arts championships including a second-place finish at the All-Africa University Games in 2023.
“Kung fu encourages better fitness and higher self-esteem(自尊). These are important qualities for a happier, longer life. That’s why I love it,” Konde said.
Kung fu, which originated in China and is a key part of its traditional culture, has grown in popularity in Kenya, especially among school-age children. Beyond the physical prowess and self-defense techniques, kung fu is deeply rooted(根植于) in a philosophy that promotes harmony, respect, and self-improvement. Students like Konde learn that kung fu is not just about fighting; it’s about inner peace and the cultivation of character. “The principles of kung fu, such as perseverance and humility, have helped me in all aspects of my life,” Konde explained.
Kevin Obonyo, a kung fu coach at Strathmore University, said the growing excitement for kung fu across Africa is because of the strengthening of China-Africa relations. “We’ve seen great progress in sectors such as agriculture, communication, construction, culture, sports and people-to-people exchanges, the China-Africa relations solidified(巩固) through initiatives like the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation and the Belt and Road Initiative,” Obonyo said.
