The Internet is always a centre of communication. However, the way we talk to each other online is getting out of control, leading to cyberbullying(网络暴力). With more and more young people using the Internet, cyberbullying has become a big problem that must be taken seriously. And the way we talk to each other online is getting out of control. It's reported that over a third of bullying happened online and the number is still increasing. Nearly every Internet user might have experienced it.
So, TietoEVRY, a software company created a new kind of font(字体) to help make people's writing more polite, and try to make cyberbullying happen less.
The font is called The Polite Type. When people write bad words online using this font, they will be changed into nicer words. For example, if you write “I hate you”, it will finally become “I disagree with you”.
“We want everyone to rethink about the words he or she uses and the actual meaning behind them. Then people will not use improper words,” said Kia Haring, a staff person from the company. “The Polite Type is also for educational purposes, at schools or by parents—one way to create a safe space for discussion.”
“In school environments, things like The Polite Type can bring real changes. Young people use the words that they hear their friends or adults use. Sometimes, they can hardly know what results those words will cause. By educating students about the importance of words and the influence of bad words, we can help them choose to be polite,” said Jonna, a researcher at Stanford University.
Naturally, the vocabulary for this new font is always changing with the language itself. And further development of this font needs all interested persons' help.
