The People’s Musician
Nie Er, born in Kunming in 1912 and died in 1935, is one of the most famous composers in China. He composed for the “March of the Volunteers” (《义勇军进行曲》) and has been remembered by Chinese people for almost a century.
In 1916, his father died and then his mother supported the whole family. As a child, he showed great musical talents. He learned traditional instruments like the dizi, erhu and yueqin in his spare time. In 1927, he entered Yunnan Provincial No. 1 Normal School (now Kunming University). There, Nie Er learned to play the piano and violin. Because he was able to move his ears, some friends began to call him “Doctor Ears”. He liked it so much that he later chose Nie Er as his new name.
In 1933, he joined the Communist Party of China(中国共产党). And in April 1935, Nie Er went to Japan and then wrote the “March of the Volunteers”, which would later become the national anthem of China. However, only three months later, he lost his life while swimming. Many people couldn’t even believe it when they heard the sad news.
In the history of modern Chinese music, Nie Er has taken a special position. Besides the “March of the Volunteers”, he wrote many pieces in his short life. They showed the labouring(劳动的) people’s expectation so they were popular with millions of people. His works have made a big difference to Chinese music and Chinese people.
