In Guangdong, people love the Aoyu because they believe it brings good luck. You can find Aoyu decorations on roofs(屋顶). During festivals, people show the Aoyu dance. They wear special clothes and move like the Aoyu to wish for good luck, nice weather, and success in school. In 2007, this dance was named an intangible cultural heritage(非物质文化遗产) of Guangdong Province.
Xing Zeliang, 69, is an inheritor(继承人) of the Aoyu dance. He began learning it when he was 13. He remembers it was very difficult at first. “I couldn’t even lift the Aoyu’s head,” he said. The head is usually made of bamboo and paper and can weigh about 30 kilograms. It is also about 65 centimeters wide.
In the past, only men could show this dance. But now, Mr. Xing teaches everyone who wants to learn. He wants to keep the tradition alive. He has also made the Aoyu lighter so that even primary school students can dance with it easily.
