Good greetings help people make friends. Besides (除了) saying “How are you?” and “Nice to meet you.”, there are other ways to say “Hello”. Let’s see how people greet each other in different countries!
Touch noses—In Qatar (卡塔尔), men greet very close friends by touching noses. Sometimes they touch noses, and then shake hands (always with the right hand). Women can also greet each other like this, but usually only with other women and not in front of lots of people.
Cheek kiss—In France (法国), people do the cheek kiss (贴面礼) to greet others. How many kisses should you give? One kiss on each cheek is normal (正常的). Remember: We don’t really kiss the cheek. We kiss the air next to it.
Bow (鞠躬)—In Nepal (尼泊尔), people greet others by putting their hands together like they are praying (祈祷). They hold their hands near the heart or higher (更高). Higher hands show more respect (尊敬), but don’t put them above the nose. Then they nod (点头) their heads a little and bow softly.
