It's common for women to wear skirts. But men can wear them, too. In Scotland(苏格兰),men wear a kind of skirt called kilt(苏格兰短裙). The kilt is their national dress.
A kilt has checks(方格）on it with different colors, like red and blue. Each family in Scotland has its own colors.
How did the people there start to wear kilts? There are many stories about it. One story is that an English man called Thomas Rawlinson invented the skirt in the 1720s.
Rawlinson had lots of workers in his factory. Most of them came from Scotland. He thought their clothing was not suitable for their work. So he cut their long clothes into shorter skirts.
Today,most people in Scotland look the kilt as formal dress. They usually only wear them on special occasions like marriages and big dinners. Only a few men still wear a kilt every day.
The army(军队）still has kilts as the dress uniform,but they no longer use them when fighting.
