Instant noodles(方便面) were invented by a Chinese-Japanese businessman named Momofuku Ando.
After World War Ⅱ, Japan was facing a serious food shortage(不足). Many Japanese people mainly depended on(依赖) food aid(援助). The Japanese government encouraged people to eat bread made from wheat(小麦) flour given by the US.
Ando believed hunger was the biggest problem, and bread could not give people balanced nutrition(营养). He thought noodles were a better choice, as the Japanese had a long tradition of eating noodles.
One day, while Ando was walking down the streets, he noticed something special. At a small food stall(摊位), many people were waiting in line just for a bowl of noodles. Although there wasn't enough food, everyone who was eating the noodles looked very happy. Ando then realized how wonderful it would be if people could have noodles whenever and wherever they needed. He decided to create a noodle dish that could be prepared in minutes with boiling water and stored for a long time.
Day in and day out, Ando worked hard in his small "lab", trying to find a way to dry noodles without breaking them. Though the noodles kept breaking, he never gave up. He kept trying new ways again and again.
One evening, when his wife was frying food in hot oil, he noticed how quickly the oil took away the moisture(水分) in the food. This gave him an idea—maybe he could use the same way for his noodles. Excited, he began testing this new way. After many experiments, Ando finally succeeded in 1958. That was how instant noodles came into the world!
