When Anna Dodson travelled to Peru two years ago, she went on more than just a vacation. She was visiting her home country.
Anna, 13, was born in Peru, but she was adopted by an American family and grew up in the United States. While in Peru, Anna saw what her life could have been like if her parents hadn't taken her away. She visited several children's homes, including one in the hills of Cuzco, near her birthplace.
"The place was really cold and dry," Anna told reporters. "The paint was falling out. The girls were in bad health because they didn't have enough food to eat." When Anna returned home to Colorado, she always thought of the place in Cuzco. She said, "I really couldn't get the girls out of my mind, and I really wanted to do something because I could have been one of those girls."
She decided to start a group called Peruvian Hearts to help. In two years, Peruvian Hearts has raised about 18,000 for the children. The group also bought some hens so the girls could eat fresh eggs.
Few people knew about Anna's actions until she won a prize for young heroes. When kids and teens make a difference, they will get the prize.
Anna says any kid can do what she did. "Believe in yourself, and follow your heart," she says.
