During the Jin Dynasty, there was a child named Che Yin. He was smart and loved to read. He grew up in a poor family and there was no light for him to study at night.
One night, he saw fireflies(萤火虫)outside his house and came up with an idea. He caught many fireflies and put them in a bag. With the weak light of the fireflies, Che Yin could see the words in the books, and he spent all of his summer nights reading like this.
At the same time, another child named Sun Kang also loved reading. One night during winter, Sun used up all of his lamp oil(灯油)and couldn’t study any longer. He was worried and didn’t know what to do. Suddenly, he found that the snow outside was shining under the moonlight. His first thought was “Oh, I can use the light from the snow to read!” He took out his books and read carefully, even though the weather was really cold.

Both of the two kids became very successful when they grew up. People thought they were really hard-working and the Chinese saying “nangyingyingxue” even came from their stories, which means “to read by the light of bagged fireflies or the moonlight from the snow”.
In the past, people had a harder time studying than we do now. Lack of light was not the only difficulty in their way. Books were expensive, so they usually had to copy books by hand. They even had to travel over mountains and rivers in order to find a good teacher. However, these difficulties never stopped young people from getting knowledge.
