The pre-show announcement instructed us to turn off our mobile phones, but I kept my phone on. I was at Vienna's Burgtheater to watch a performance of Kirill Serebrennikov's Barocco, but as a non-German speaker, I'm dependent on the surtitles(唱词字幕). For this performance, they were accessible via the Burgtheater's free surtitle app Prompt, which audience members are able to download to their phones before the show. During the performance, I was able to follow the translation on my phone. The surtitles were written in white on black so there was minimal glow(极暗淡的光) to distract other audience members.
The Burgtheater isn't alone in offering such a service. In Vienna, surtitle apps are available for all productions in German and English, but Martin Kušej's production of Faust is also available in Russian, while Three Winters by a Croatian playwright is available in BSC (Bosnian, Serbian and Croatian) languages. These apps serve a double function in that they are intended for hard-of-hearing audience members as well as non-native speakers.
The key difference from the usual method of presenting surtitles, on screens mounted either above or at the sides of the stage, is that you must look back and forth between the screen and the stage, which can be distracting. The performance I was watching was music-driven, so I only had to occasionally glance at the screen, but I'd imagine this might be more of an issue in a text-heavy production. Plus—and this is a very specific complaint—as a critic, it's harder to write notes while holding a phone.
Surtitles are an access tool in more ways than one. International productions aside, in the UK we still tend to think of them in relation to hearing difficulties. Data shows that people increasingly watch TV with the subtitles on. Yet, when it comes to theater, they can sometimes feel like an afterthought. Apps offer an alternative to more traditional surtitles, but is this the way forward? Should more places in the UK be experimenting with them?

根据第一段中“I was at Vienna's Burgtheater to ... the translation on my phone.(我在维也纳的城堡剧院观看基里尔·谢列布连尼科夫的《巴洛克》的演出,但作为一个不会说德语的人,我依赖于唱词字幕。
故选A。
由此可推知,画线词所在句“The performance I was watching was music-driven, so I only had to occasionally glance at the screen, but I'd imagine this might be more of an issue in a text-heavy production.(我观看的这场表演以音乐为主导,所以我只需偶尔瞥一眼屏幕,但我猜在文本密集的演出中这可能是个更严重的问题。)”
根据最后一段中“International productions aside, in the UK ... be experimenting with them?(除了国际演出之外,在英国,人们仍然倾向于将字幕与听力障碍联系在一起。 可知,在英国,人们仍然倾向于将字幕与听力障碍联系在一起,对字幕有偏见,结合最后的问句“Should more places in the UK be experimenting with them?”
