Many traditional woodcut prints(版画)are either black and white or simple in colour, but reduction woodcuts(绝版本刻)can show rich colours.

The reduction woodcut uses one piece of wood to make a colourful artwork. The artist cuts and prints different layers(层)in order on the same piece of wood. The reduction woodcuts became an intangible cultural heritage(非物质文化遗产)in Pu'er, Yunnan, in 2009.
Leng Guangmian is a 40-year-old artist who makes pictures by carving(雕刻)on a piece of wood. He started learning this in 2003. Leng said that making these woodcut prints is like going on an amazing experience. Before he starts carving, he needs to plan the whole picture and choose colours for different layers. First, he carves on a piece of wood. Then, he puts colours on the wood to make a wooden print. After that, he carves more pictures into the same wood, puts different colours, and prints over and over again. "Every time I print the pictures, I never know what they will look like in the end," he said. "As I see beautiful pictures layer by layer, I get more excited," added Leng. However, finishing these artworks is not easy. A big picture usually takes several months to finish.
Leng wants his artwork to show both great woodcutting skills and the culture and life in Pu'er. "For my works, there are two themes: Tea Horse Road, because Pu'er is one of the starting places of that road; and disappearing villages," Leng said. "Many old villages in Pu'er need rebuilding, so I want to make people remember their beauty before they are gone."
Leng Guangmian is now getting more people to know about the reduction woodcuts. He trains farmers in Pu'er and brings the art into schools. To make students understand and learn the art quickly, he even thought of a new idea of cardboard printing. "By using a small cardboard and making it easier with three to five colours, students can get the beauty of the art." Leng said.
