D
Hansel and Gretel were a poor brother and sister. They lived with their father and stepmother(继母)near a big forest. One night, the stepmother said, “We have no more food. Take the children into the forest and leave them there!”
Hansel heard this. He told Gretel, “Don’t worry. I have a plan.” That night, he picked up small white stones(石头)and put them in his pocket.
The next day, their father took them into the forest. As they walked, Hansel dropped the stones. After their parents left, Gretel cried, “Hansel, how do we get home?”
“Follow the stones,” Hansel said. The stones shone in the moonlight, and they walked home safely.
But a few days later, the stepmother said again, “Take them far into the forest.” This time, Hansel had only bread. He dropped bread pieces on the way.
At night, Hansel said, “Let’s go home.” But the birds had eaten the bread!
“We’re lost,” said Gretel.
They walked and saw a house made of candy. “Let’s eat!” said Hansel.
“Nibble, nibble, little mouse, who is eating at my house?” said an old voice. A witch(女巫)came out and took them inside.
The witch gave Hansel lots of food and told Gretel to work. “I will eat your brother soon!” she laughed.
One day, she said, “Gretel, check the oven(炉).”
“It’s too small. Can you show me?” Gretel asked.
The witch looked in—and Gretel pushed(推)her in and closed the door!
Gretel ran to free Hansel. They found gold in the witch’s house and went home.
Their father was happy to see them. The stepmother was gone. Now they had food and lived happily ever after.
