Most animals need a way to hide. Some have to hide from bigger animals. Most have to hide from people. But what is the best way for an animal to hide? Some foxes dig holes. Sea lions can go under the water. Squirrels can hide inside trees. But some animals have an even quicker way to hide. They just stay where they are!
An animal’s colour can help it hide. Some rabbits have fur that changes colour. In winter, their fur turns white. When snow falls, people can’t see these rabbits. The white rabbits hide in the best place of all—right inside their own fur!
Some fish can change their colour when they need to. They can become green or blue or brown. Then they swim deep under the water. When these fish don’t move, they look just like sand or rocks. So, other fish think they are just looking at the bottom (底部) of the sea and don’t know that there are fish hiding there. This helps the fish hide from other fish that might want to eat them.
Some bugs (小虫) have the same colour as some plants. Try to find an orange ladybug (瓢虫) sitting on an orange flower. Or try to find a green grasshopper (蚱蜢) in the green grass.
An animal’s shape can help too. The bittern (麻鳽) is a bird. Its body is long and thin. The bittern lives in tall grass. The long thin bird looks just like the grass around it. You can look at the grass all day but never see the bird hiding there.
