Long ago, a monster called Nian lived in the mountains. It came to the village every Chinese New Year’s Eve to scare people.
An old man said Nian was afraid of red things and loud noises(响声). He told the villagers to use these to keep Nian away.
People put red couplets on doors and hung(悬挂) red lanterns. Every house looked bright and red, just like a big fire.
They set off firecrackers(鞭炮) and made loud“bang bang” sounds. Nian heard the noise and saw the red lights, and got very scared.
Nian ran back to the mountains and never came again. The villagers cheered and hugged each other happily.
From then on, people wear red clothes and set off fireworks every year. This is how the Spring Festival traditions started!
