[2026 原创]Can you speak to dolphins? Of course you can, but you won't be able to understand them! We interviewed Kamal, a biologist, and asked him what research on dolphin communication had shown. This is what he told us.
Just like cats and other mammals（哺乳动物）, dolphins communicate by using sound, vision, touch and taste. Each dolphin has its own special whistle（口哨声）to tell itself and to call others. Dolphins don't have the ability to smell, but their hearing and eyesight are excellent. Dolphins have got their own language and start talking to each other from birth. They can make various sounds.
Then Kamal told us a very interesting experiment was done with a mother dolphin and her two-year-old baby in an aquarium（水族馆）. They talked to each other over the telephone! The two dolphins were in separate tanks（水箱）. Unfortunately, the biologists couldn't understand what the dolphins were talking about. However, it was very clear that the dolphins knew what they were talking about.
Finally, Kamal told us he and his team have been listening to dolphins for more than 17 years, using special equipment（设备）to record and analyze their language. Unfortunately, there is no real result. But maybe one day we'll get a phone call from a dolphin and talk with it freely.
