Learning to ask “Why”
Starting junior high means more than learning new facts. It is about learning to think in a new way. In primary school, you mostly learn what things are. Now, you begin to ask why and how. This is called critical(批判性) thinking.
There is a wise saying from ancient China that guides this spirit:
“学而不思则罔,思而不学则殆。”
It means: "Learning without thinking is of no use. Thinking without learning is perilous."
This tells us two important lessons: Do not just memorize(背诵). If you only learn facts but never question or understand them, your knowledge will be empty and confusing(令人困惑的). Do not just guess. If you only think but do not learn from books or teachers, you may draw wrong conclusions(结论).
In your new subjects—like science, history, and deeper English studies—you will practise this balance. Your teachers will not just give you answers. They will ask you "Why do you think so?" or "How do you know?"
Your "new start" here is also a start of becoming an independent thinker. Remember, every great discovery(发现) in history began with a simple question. Your journey to find answers begins now.
1. What is the new thing students begin to do in junior high, besides learning facts?

2. What is the Chinese saying in the passage? Please write it in English.

3. What problem happens if we only learn facts but never think about them?

4. In class, what questions might teachers ask students to think about?

5. Think about your new school life. Give one example of how you can "learn and think" together in a new subject. (At least 30 words)

答案

1. They begin to ask "why" and "how"/to think in a new way/to practise critical thinking.
2. "Learning without thinking is of no use. Thinking without learning is perilous."
3. Our knowledge will be empty and we will be confused.
4. They might ask "Why do you think so?" or "How do you know?"
5. (Example answer) In my new science class, when I learn that plants need sunlight, I won't just remember it. I will ask myself "why?" and try to find the answer by doing a small experiment or asking my teacher. I can put one plant in the sun and another in a dark box, then observe what happens to both. This way, I am learning the fact and thinking about the reason together.
