A bundle of sticks
There was an old rich man. He had three greedy sons.
Every day, the three brothers fought with each other over their father's fortune.
Their father always told them to work together, but they never listened to him.
After thinking hard, the old man came up with an idea.
He gathered his three sons and said, “I will leave all my fortune to the one who can break this bundle of sticks.”
The three brothers started fighting each other to be the first to try.
“That’s easy!”
“Give it to me!”
The father gave them the bundle of sticks.
The eldest son tried first. He pushed and pulled with all his strength, but he could not bend the sticks.
The second son laughed at his brother and took the bundle from him.
He also pushed and pulled with all his strength, but he could not break the sticks either.
Finally, the youngest son gave it a try. He kicked and kicked, but the result was the same.
Then the father untied the bundle of sticks.
“Now, each of you take one stick and try to break it again,” he said.
This time, the three brothers broke the sticks easily.
“Do you see what I mean?” asked the father.
“If you stand together, no one can beat you. But if you always fight with each other and insist on going your separate ways, you will be as weak as a stick.”
