There are two mice. They are good friends. One mouse lives in the country and the other lives in the city. After many years, the country mouse meets the city mouse. He says, “Do come and see me at my house in the country.” So the city mouse goes to the country. The country mouse takes the city mouse to his home in the field, and gives him all the most delicious food. The city mouse says, “The food is not good, and your house is not good either. Why do you live in a hole in the field? You should come and live in the city. You will live in a nice house made of stone. You can have nice food to eat. You must come and see me at my house in the city.” The country mouse goes to the house of the city mouse. It is a very good house. The food is good too. But just when they begin to eat, they hear a great noise. The city mouse cries, “Run! Run! The cat is coming!” They run away quickly and hide. After some time, they come out. When they come out, the country mouse says, “I do not like living in the city. I like living in my hole in the field. For it is nicer to be poor but happy than to be rich but afraid.”
