I recently visited Jenfelder, a new neighbourhood in Hamburg, Germany, with a wastewater reuse project! Traditionally, water comes into a city from outside, and wastewater is sent back to treatment factories far away. This new system separates wastewater into three streams to be reused locally. Rainwater is collected to water the gardens. "Gray water" from kitchen and bathroom is used to flush toilets. And "Black water" from toilets is sent to a local treatment factory to be turned into biogas(沼气). The system reduces water use by 30 percent and produces electricity for hundreds of homes.
