热考素材 社会主义先进文化 Chinese Weiqi legend Nie Weiping died in Beijing in January 2026, at the age of 73. He was one of the most important people in modern Weiqi history. His great career influenced many generations of Weiqi players.
Nie is best remembered for his historic victory in the first Japan-China Super Weiqi Competition in 1985. At that time, few people believed China could win because Chinese players had been worse than Japanese players in the board game for a long time. When Nie played in Tokyo, the best Japanese player Kobayashi Koichi had already won six games in a row against Chinese players. Nie became the last remaining Chinese player, facing Japan's three highest-ranked competitors on his own.
Under great pressure, he beat all three players. Later, he won the final game in Beijing and helped China win the championship. Nie became a national hero that night. That same evening, China's women's volleyball team also defeated Japan to win the FIVB Volleyball Women's World Cup. The two victories inspired people a lot and many people celebrated happily at Tiananmen Square. Large crowds gathered there with great joy. For many people, these victories showed China's growing national pride, as China was beginning to open up to the outside world.
As a Weiqi player, Nie Weiping was famous for his strong spirit, great mind, and his ability to win long and difficult matches. He left behind a legacy that influenced the game in China and inspired generations of players.
