A
In 2026, we celebrate Chinese New Year on 17 February. Following this date are two weeks of celebrations. On the 15th day of the first lunar month, it is the Lantern Festival, featuring thousands of beautiful Chinese lanterns into the night sky. People release them hoping to light up the new year.
Traditionally, the outside of a Chinese lantern is made of rice paper or silk. The frame(框架) is made of bamboo or wheat straw. The paper covering the lantern can let some light through.
Here is how the lanterns work.
1. Paper covering
Lanterns are light so the air can lift(举起) them into the sky easily.
2. Fuel source
A flammable(易燃的) paper is lit at the base of the lantern. This makes the air hot inside it.
3. Hot air
As the air becomes hot, it spreads out and becomes lighter. This makes it go up.
4. Pushing up
The rising hot air pushes the lantern's top to lift it.
5. Cold air
Cold air outside is heavier than the air in the lantern. The cold air stays under the lantern and holds it up, if it is colder than the air inside.
6. Flying high
Hot air inside the lanterns makes them fly, and they can stay in the night sky for up to 40 minutes.
The Chinese lanterns symbolize good luck for the new year and drive away bad luck. People can see the bright lights as the lanterns go up in the sky, standing for(代表) hope and a guiding light to bring people into the new year.
1. What does the underlined word "release" mean in Paragraph 1?
A. Stand out. B. Let go. C. Get over. D. Jump off.
2. Why can Chinese lanterns go up into the sky?
A. Because the paper covering can let a lot of light through.
B. Because the cold air inside is heavier than the outside air.
C. Because the hot air inside spreads out and becomes lighter.
D. Because people decorate the lanterns with special symbols.

根据画线词所在句前一句“... thousands of beautiful Chinese lanterns into the night sky.” stand out突出;let go释放;get over克服;jump off跳下。

1. 词义猜测题:定位到第一段“On the 15th day of the first lunar month, it is the Lantern Festival, featuring thousands of beautiful Chinese lanterns into the night sky. People release them hoping to light up the new year.”,结合语境可知,元宵节人们将灯笼放到夜空,故release意为“放飞、释放”,对应选项B(Let go)。A项“Stand out”意为突出,C项“Get over”意为克服,D项“Jump off”意为跳下,均不符合语境。
2. 细节理解题:题干问灯笼升空的原因,定位到原文第3点“Hot air”中“As the air becomes hot, it spreads out and becomes lighter. This makes it go up.”,可知内部热空气膨胀变轻使灯笼升空,对应选项C。
3. 细节理解题:题干问放飞灯笼的象征意义,定位到最后一段“The Chinese lanterns symbolize good luck for the new year... standing for hope...”,可知象征新年的好运和希望,对应选项D。
