In January, Brecken Neumann, an American from Mississippi, joined RedNote with many other “TikTok refugees”. He posted a photo of himself and his daughter on RedNote. The photo had a caption that said, “Hello everyone! This is myself and my daughter saying hello to all and look forward to all the new friends we make across the sea!”
Shortly after, a Chinese internet user named Rongrong replied with a nice photo of her family. She also sent warm greetings to Brecken. This scene of two families from different countries communicating on RedNote really touched the hearts of millions of netizens in both China and the US.
Brecken's post on RedNote got over 127,000 likes and 18,000 comments. A repost of their exchange on X platform had more than 7.9 million views.
On March 22, 2025, these two families finally met in Shanghai. Six hours before Brecken's family arrived, Rongrong's family started to get ready. They went to the most authentic pastry shop in Shanghai and bought Qingtuan. Rongrong said that in Chinese tradition, Qingtuan means reunion and that it's a good gift for friends.
The couple taught their 19-month-old daughter to say the names of Brecken's family members and to greet them in English. They also prepared a bunch of Phalaenopsis orchids which stand for pure friendship.
When Brecken's family came out of customs, Rongrong shouted excitedly, “They're here!” Her voice could be heard all over the terminal. She told Global Times that she felt very excited when she saw them.
Reporters from Global Times saw that the two families exchanged gifts at the airport. Brecken's family gave hoodies with the words “Let's Be Friends” in Chinese.
The two little girls, Brecken's 16-month-old daughter and Rongrong's 19-month-old daughter, met for the first time. When Rongrong's daughter shared a cookie, the little American girl reached out to take it. It's a moving image!
