[2025 江苏徐州期末]The American ship to Yokohama left the evening before. Phileas Fogg was going to catch it. He found a small boat. But the owner John thought it was impossible for his boat to go to Yokohama. Phileas Fogg gave him a lot of money. In the end, John agreed to try.
An hour later, they were on their way in the small boat. Travelling 800 miles (1 mile ≈ 1,609 metres) on a small boat was a dangerous thing to do. It was even more dangerous at the time of the year because the wind was stronger than usual.
The boat was going as fast as it could. Then, a storm was coming from the south. John took action right away. He asked the people to close every door and window to stop the water from getting into the boat. All that day, large waves and strong wind pushed the boat. Towards evening, the wind changed direction and blew across the boat. The waves hit the boat from the side and this was very dangerous. As night came, the storm grew stronger.
It was an awful night. Sometimes, the waves came right over the boat. When daylight came, the storm was almost over, and the day was quite calm. It was the eleventh of November, and they were about one hundred miles from Shanghai. Phileas Fogg had to be in Shanghai that evening to catch the ship to Yokohama.
They worked as hard as possible, but the little boat could not make it in time. As they came into the harbour（港湾）in Shanghai, they saw the American ship leaving.
