Huang Xuhua, the chief designer of China's first nuclear submarine(核潜艇), died in Wuhan in 2025 at the age of 99. For nearly 30 years, almost no one knew his name or his work. His story is both amazing and truly inspiring.
In the 1950s, China had no nuclear submarines and received no outside help. Huang's team started from zero. Without computers, they did calculations by hand or with abacuses(算盘). They even used toy models for research. It was extremely difficult, but they never gave up. In 1970, China launched(下水) its first nuclear submarine, Long March I, becoming the fifth country in the world to build one.
For more than 30 years, Huang's work was top secret. His family didn't even know what he did until 1987 when a Shanghai magazine published a report about him. The article only referred to him as Chief Designer Huang, without giving his full name.
Huang Xuhua did not seek fame; he only wanted to serve his country. Even in his 90s, he went to the office every day and helped with new projects.
