Wednesday/Week 4
any people think that stem cell (干细胞) donation is scary, painful and dangerous. But Wang Juntao, a 22-year-old college student, proved it's safe. Four years ago, he registered (注册) to donate his stem cells. In February, he got a call, telling him he matched a patient with a blood disease.

"I checked online and talked to Red Cross workers," Wang said. "They said it's safe, just some discomfort (不舒服)." In May, he finished the donation and became China's 20,000th unrelated stem cell donor.

Stem cell transplants (移植) save people with blood diseases. "At our hospital, 80% of patients who receive transplants live for five years or more," said a doctor.
Many people think doctors take stem cells from bone marrow (骨髓) in the backbone, but it's actually often done through the blood in the arm. Wang felt sick from the shots before the donation, but he soon felt better. "I hope my story shows how easy and important this is," he said.
Donors can get free health checks before and after the donation. They also get benefits like free bus and train rides for life. It's simple: give a little, save a life. Wang's story encourages more people to help others.
