Come out of your shell
Long ago, there was a turtle named Tilly. She was very shy. She didn’t have any friends. “It is so hard to talk to others,” she thought. “I feel safe inside my shell.”
When Tilly met other animals, she always hid in her shell. Last week, she tried to say hello to a fish, but her voice just disappeared. She pulled her head, legs and tail into her shell.
The fish swam away. “Maybe Tilly doesn’t like me,” he said.
“I didn’t mean it,” Tilly thought sadly.

One day, Tilly met a frog. He looked happy and friendly.
Freddy: Hi, Tilly! I’m Freddy. Come and play!
Tilly wanted to swim over. Her mouth opened a little, but no sound came out. Just then, a butterfly named Lisa flew over.
Freddy: Lisa, why doesn’t Tilly want to play with us?
Lisa: I think Tilly is just shy, because I was shy too. I used to hide in my cocoon, feeling lonely and small. But one day, I decided to try my best. It wasn’t easy, but I kept trying. I came out. Now I have beautiful wings and many friends.
Freddy: Good for you! Let’s help Tilly come out of her shell.
They turned to Tilly.
Lisa: Hey, Tilly. You need to come out of your shell. Don’t be shy.

When they heard this, Freddy and Lisa helped Tilly meet others.

Tilly's face turned red. She wanted to hide in her shell again, but she calmed down and said the words.
“That was not so scary,” she thought. “It’s good to come out of my shell.”
Tilly smiled. She still felt a little shy, but that was all right. She wanted to stay and see what would happen next.
