Most people know that lighthouses(灯塔) help keep ships safe. But in many places, lighthouses could not be built there many years ago, so lightships were used instead.
Unlike other ships, a lightship didn’t travel from place to place. It stayed in one place, acting as a floating lighthouse. Usually, the workers stayed on the ship for four months at a time. Their job was to take care of the light. They worked carefully to keep it going all year round.
The first lightship in America was put in Virginia in 1820. Three years later, the second one was put in New York Harbor. Many more were put into service in the following years.
The lightships in America used different kinds of energy. For more than 50 years, whale oil was used on most lightships. Then, in 1877, kerosene(煤油) came into use.


Finally, in 1892, the lightships began to use electricity.
At one time, there were more than one hundred lightships in America. The last one was built in 1952. In 1985, the use of lightships ended in America.
Today only a few lightships are left. Many have been turned into museums. A few have become floating restaurants. The days of working lightships were over.
