For many years, milu deer were known as "Pere David's deer". A Frenchman David saw it in Beijing for the first time in 1865 and introduced it to Europe. However, it is now widely called the milu deer, showing respect for its Chinese origin and China's protection for them.

The milu is also called "sibuxiang" in Chinese, which means "like none of the four" because of their special appearance—a horse-like face, a donkey-like tail, cow-like feet and stag(雄鹿)-like horns. These animals are are native to China and are described in many ancient Chinese books.
However, the number of milu in China dropped because of climate change and human activities. During the Ming and Qing dynasties, there were only a few hundred left. They were kept in a park in Beijing. In 1894, a flood from the Yongding River broke the walls of the park, and some milu ran away and died. In 1900, the remaining milu deer died or were taken away during the war.
Fortunately, starting in August 1985, China brought 77 milu deer from the UK back in three batches(批次) to Nanhaizi in Beijing and to Yancheng in Jiangsu Province. This started a successful effort to increase their number in China. Since then, the number of milu has grown a lot, with over 15,000 now across the country.
Milu deer are like "engineers" of the wetlands. They feed on plants like reeds(芦苇) in wetlands. They stop some plants from growing too much, so they help protect living places for other plants.
