It is said that every year on the second day of the second lunar month, the dragon wakes up and raises its head. Because of this, the day is called "Dragon Head-raising Day". Ancient people believed that after Dragon Head-raising Day, there would be more rain. And rain was very necessary for farming. So Dragon Head-raising Day marked the start of spring and farming.
People have many ways to celebrate Dragon Head-raising Day. The most popular one is to have a haircut. Many believe that having a haircut during the first lunar month may bring bad luck to their uncles—mainly their mother's brothers. They hope getting a haircut on Dragon Head-raising Day can keep them away from bad luck.
Among Chinese festival traditions, food always plays an important role. On Dragon Head-raising Day, people eat food named after the dragon. Noodles are called the dragon's beard (longxu). Dumplings are called the dragon's ears(long'er).
People also hold activities like the dragon dance on the day. In some places, people make dragon lanterns too. Small red boats go down the rivers and carry the lanterns, which stand for people's wishes for good luck.
