Bian Que visited Cai Huan Gong
One day, Bian Que saw Cai Huan Gong, the King of the State of Qi(齐国) and said, “Your Majesty, I think you are ill. But your illness is only under the skin and can be easily cured(治愈). If you do not treat(治疗) it now, I’m afraid your illness will become serious(严重的).”
Huan Gong did not believe him. He said, “I am not ill.”
After Bian Que left, Huan Gong said to his officers, “These doctors always like to treat healthy people to show off their good medical skill.”
Ten days later, Bian Que saw Huan Gong again. He said, “Your Majesty, your illness is in your muscles(肌肉). If you do not treat it now, it will become more serious.”

Huan Gong was unhappy and did not listen to Bian Que.
Another ten days later, Bian Que saw Huan Gong and said anxiously(焦急地), “Your Majesty, your illness is in your stomach(胃) and intestines(肠). If you do not treat it, it will worsen(恶化).”
Huan Gong still would not listen to Bian Que.
Another ten days later, when Bian Que saw Huan Gong, he turned round and left. Huan Gong was surprised and sent someone to ask him for the reason(理由).
Bian Que said, “When a person gets ill and his illness is only under the skin, it can be easily cured with hot compresses(热敷). When it is between the skin and the flesh, it can still be cured by acupuncture(针灸); even if it develops(发展) into the stomach and intestines, medicine will still work. But when it reaches the marrow(骨髓), then one can only resign himself to the fate(命运). The doctor can no longer do anything about it. Now His Majesty’s illness reaches the marrow. I can do nothing to cure him.”
Five days afterwards, Huan Gong felt pain(疼痛) all over his body. He sent for Bian Que.
Bian Que expected that Huan Gong would ask him for treatment. And if he couldn’t cure the illness, he would get into trouble. So he ran away to the State of Qin a few days ago.
Soon afterwards, Cai Huan Gong died of his illness.

2. Because he didn't believe he was ill, and he thought Bian Que liked to treat healthy people to show off his good medical skill.

解析
