Afternoon tea is a light meal between 3:30 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. During the meal, people usually have tea, small sandwiches, and many other pastries(糕点) like cakes, scones(烤饼) and macaroons. This is what most of us know about afternoon tea. Now let's find out more about it.
Afternoon tea started in England. Although it holds an important place in the hearts of English people, the afternoon tea tradition is actually quite young.
In the 17th century, King Charles Ⅱ of England married Catherine of Braganza, a Portuguese princess(葡萄牙公主). She was a tea lover. Because of her, tea became popular with rich people in England.
The afternoon tea tradition developed about 200 years later, in the early 1800s. At the time, rich people in England had their evening meal very late. It was a long time to wait for dinner. A duchess(公爵夫人) named Anna always felt hungry in the afternoon. So, she would ask for some light food and tea. Then it became her ritual, and she also started to ask her friends to join her for tea at her home in the afternoon. Later having afternoon tea became a social event and even a tradition in England.
Today the tradition is popular all over the world. However, it's no longer a meal prepared at home. People can enjoy their afternoon tea in tea rooms, hotels, and restaurants.
