Learning Before Exploring
Before our study trip begins, let's take a moment to learn about some of Beijing's most famous landmarks. Understanding their history, builders, and purpose will help us appreciate(欣赏) what we see and experience even more.
The Great Wall was built over 2,000 years ago. It was mainly built by the First Qin Emperor (Qin Shi Huang) and later expanded(扩建) in the Ming Dynasty. It was built to protect China from invaders(入侵者) from the north.
The Palace Museum was built about 600 years ago during the Ming Dynasty by Emperor Yongle. It was the home of Chinese emperors for almost 500 years, where they lived and ruled the country.
The Summer Palace was first built in 1750 by Emperor Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty. It was rebuilt by Empress Cixi in the late 19th century. It was a royal garden where emperors and their families went to escape the summer heat.
The Temple of Heaven(天坛) was built in the early 1400s by Emperor Yongle of the Ming Dynasty. It was a special place where emperors prayed for good harvests and peace for the country.
Hutongs were not built by one person——they grew naturally over centuries, especially during the Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties. These narrow streets and traditional houses show how ordinary people lived in old Beijing. They are like living museums of local life.
