三、阅读理解
John Stickovich was on his way to work when he saw a house on fire, with no firemen there to help. There were two people outside the house who were looking sad.
“The mother was sitting on the grass with her baby, and I asked her if she was all right. She said, ‘My other baby is still inside the burning(燃烧) house,’ and I thought, ‘Oh no, I have to save the baby.’ That was what I had to do,” said John.
As he walked around the house, he tried to enter(进去) through the side door. But the smoke and the fire were too strong and he couldn't get into it. At the back of the house, another door was open and John crawled(爬行) in to look for the baby but had to come back because of the fire.
He asked the mother where she had last seen her baby. Then he went back into the fire again to look for the baby, but he couldn't find it as there was little time and air left. He thought about saving himself, but changed his mind when he heard the baby crying. He moved towards the sound, held the baby and did his best to run out. After they made it out of the house safely, the mother kept thanking him.
“I feel great that I saved the baby. The mother doesn't have to be sad about losing her child. Today, that baby gets to live,” John said. “People are calling to say I did a great job, but I want to say I would do it for anyone. We all need help sometimes.”
