Sending willow branches as a farewell
In ancient China,people often broke a willow branch and gave it to their relatives and friends who were leaving to express their good wishes and hope for their return. In Chinese, the character for the willow tree sounds like the character "liu" which means asking a person to stay. At the closing ceremony of Beijing Winter Olympics,"breaking willows and sending feelings",the Chinese style of farewell,impressed the world.
Sworn brotherhood
In traditional Chinese culture,blood brothers are considered as having a deeper connection than ordinary friends. They swear(发誓) to offer help and support in times of need. During the ceremony,each person takes a stick of incense and the "Jinlan genealogy(金兰谱)". Then they drop their finger blood into a bowl of wine. Next,they take an oath to support and care for each other. Finally,they share a drink and exchange gifts.
Winding Stream Party started from the Zhou Dynasty. This ceremony was held by the river to get rid of disasters and diseases for people. Later,to add fun to it,friends filled cups with wine and allowed them to float along the stream. Whoever the cup floated in front of had to pick it up and drink it in one go. Those who were punished not only had to drink,but also had to create a poem on the spot to express their feelings. It was welcomed by scholars and writers.
