In 2017, Wang Dayong used a drone(无人机) to look at Shitizhai, a village on the eastern side of the Gaoligong Mountains in Yunnan. He saw that the land was damaged and empty. It looked like a big scar on the mountains. Wang learned that this place once grew famous coffee. Long ago, Yunnan's coffee won big awards. But later, farmers cut down coffee trees to grow other crops. The land became weak, and people left the village.
Wang loved coffee and wanted to help. He left his job of making documentaries in Shenzhen and moved to the mountains. Local leaders liked his idea of bringing back coffee farming. Wang and his team planted new trees. They stopped using chemicals and taught farmers to pick coffee cherries carefully.
The Gaoligong Mountains block the warm and wet air from the Indian Ocean on the western side. This makes the eastern side ideal for growing coffee trees. But farmers wanted more coffee, so they planted too many trees close together. They picked all the coffee cherries at once, even if they were not ready. When coffee prices dropped, they cut down the trees to grow other things.
Wang wanted to change this. He and his team planted trees that give shade. They used no chemicals and focused on nature-friendly farming. They replaced old coffee beans with better coffee beans called Arabica. Farmers learned to pick coffee cherries one by one.
Now, the mountains are green again. Coffee trees grow under tall trees, just like nature wants. Farmers make more money because the coffee tastes better. Wang believes the countryside holds huge, open spaces for possibilities.
