There are many kinds of traditional instruments in China, and guqin is one of them. It is about 3,000 years old. Xu Chaoran, a guqin player, is best known for putting the guqin to modern use. She often uses the guqin to play some popular songs.
When Xu was a little girl, she was very interested in music. She learned different kinds of musical instruments, such as the guitar and the piano. At the age of 9, she began to play the guzheng. She became a big fan of this amazing traditional musical instrument.
In 2009, Xu went to study traditional Chinese music at the Wuhan Conservatory of Music. There, she spent a lot of time learning guqin. Years later, she became a teacher in a high school after finishing her studies.
Xu also makes videos of her playing the guqin in her free time. In her videos, she plays modern songs using the guqin. “The guqin has strong power (能力),” Xu says. “The guqin isn’t just for playing traditional pieces. We can play today’s music on it, too.”
Xu hopes young people can love guqin music and learn about our traditional culture.
