The Bad Beginning is about three children named Violet, Klaus and Sunny. When the children are on the beach, they get terrible news that their parents died in a fire. A family friend Mr. Poe comes to tell them the bad news. Mr. Poe takes the three kids to a house to find new parents for them. Then he finds somebody named Count Olaf and Mr. Poe leaves them at Count Olaf’s house.
However, Count Olaf treats（对待）the kids badly. He hits one of the boys, Klaus in the face. He makes them do chores all the time, and he also makes all of them sleep in one bed. The kids have to ask Mr. Poe for help, but he can do nothing.
One day, Count Olaf gives the children roles in his new play. The play is a scam（诈财骗局）. In the play, Violet will marry Count Olaf. In this way, Count Olaf will take away the kids’ money they get from their parents.
