Sue and Johnsy were young artists sharing a studio in New York. When winter came, Johnsy got very sick with pneumonia. The doctor told Sue that Johnsy had little chance to recover unless she wanted to live.
Lying in bed, Johnsy kept watching an old ivy vine outside her window. There were only five leaves left. Johnsy believed she would die when the last leaf of the ivy vine fell. Sue was so worried about her best friend.
Sue tried to cheer her friend up and secretly asked their neighbour Behrman, an old painter, for help. On the stormy night that the last leaf fell, Behrman painted a perfect ivy leaf on the wall. When Johnsy saw the "last leaf" still staying there after the storm, she regained(重新获得)hope. "It stayed to teach me how wrong I was," she said.
Meanwhile, Behrman caught pneumonia from working in the cold and died. But his painting, that one perfect leaf, had saved Johnsy's life. Though he never painted his masterpiece that he dreamed of in his life, his final act became his greatest work.
That painted leaf wasn't just on a wall; it grew in Johnsy's heart, helping her find the hope to live.
