In Siyang County, Suqian, there is a very important place called the Sishui Kingdom Tombs. It is an ancient cemetery(墓地) from the Western Han Dynasty, where nobles of the Sishui Kingdom were buried. This place became a national key cultural relics protection unit in 2013.
The tombs are arranged in an orderly way, along a north-south axis. Long ago, each tomb had a square or rectangular mound on the ground, just like the tombs of emperors in the Western Han Dynasty. Archaeologists have found many precious things here. There are wooden figures, bronze ware, lacquer ware and jade articles. A 1.2-metre-long ancient musical instrument and a set of lacquer boxes are very famous examples of the Han Dynasty crafts.
One big tomb called Daqingdun Tomb even has the words “Sishui King's Tomb” on its wooden parts. This tells us it might be the tomb of a Sishui King. These findings help us learn about people's life, economy and culture in Siyang during the Han Dynasty.
Today, people are working hard to protect these tombs. They are like a “time machine” that shows us history.
