Anne is an orphan（孤儿）.
She is 11 years old. She is not tall or short, and she is beauti-
ful. She has long red hair. Now
Anne lives with Marilla and Matthew at Green Gables（绿山墙）. It is their house. It is old and large.
It is Anne's 14th day to live at Green Gables. After breakfast, Marilla asks Anne to do some work in the kitchen. Then their neigh- bour Mrs Lynde comes. Anne just wants to say hello to her, but she hears Mrs Lynde saying, “Marilla, that girl is an orphan. Usually, an or- phan is not polite or nice...”
Before Marilla says a word, Anne runs out of the kitchen. She says to Mrs Lynde, “You don't know me. Why do you say that about me? You aren't polite...” Marilla stops Anne and says, “Go to your room, Anne. I will be back soon.”
Mrs Lynde gets up from her chair and says, “I'm going home now, Marilla. You'll have a lot of problems with that girl!”
“But you first said she was not polite or nice!” Marilla answers.
