For 14-year-old Xiao Jingsheng, break time used to be a rush. “I only had 10 minutes to run to the toilet and back to class,” he said. But this autumn, everything changed. Beijing’s middle schools extended(延长) break time to 15 minutes, giving students like Xiao more time to relax and play.
Now, Xiao often chats with friends about their favourite books or plays healthy games like jumping rope, badminton, Chinese chess or solving word puzzles(谜) during breaks. “I used to feel sleepy in the afternoon, but now I’m more focused in class,” he shared.
At Beijing No. 101 Middle School, students are excited about their new “animal friends”. The school opened a small farm with ducks and rabbits. Zhang Boren,13,loves feeding the animals. “We get closer to nature, which is so refreshing!” he said. Some students even take turns cleaning the animal cages as part of labour(劳动) education.
Other schools have creative ideas too. Another school in Beijing turned its ground floor into a biology lab, where students study the life cycles of plants and insects. The second-floor hallway has comfortable reading corners and chess tables. PE teachers also walk around the playground to keep everyone safe. “Sometimes the ground is wet in the morning, so we remind students to do upper-body exercises instead of running,” said a PE teacher.
This change isn’t just about fun—it helps students stay healthy. Longer breaks let them stretch their legs, breathe fresh air,and reduce stress. As Xiao put it,“These 15 minutes make my whole day better.”
With more time to play and learn, Beijing’s students are growing happier and stronger. It’s a small change, but it’s making a big difference in their lives.
