The Emperor’s New Clothes
Once upon a time, there was a king who loved wearing new clothes and always wanted to show off (炫耀) to everyone.
One day, two tricksters (骗子) came and told the king they could make a magical fabric (布料) that only smart people could see, while foolish people couldn’t see it at all.
The king thought this was a good idea, so he gave them money to start working, but the tricksters only pretended (假装) to weave (织) the cloth. The king sent his best minister (大臣) to see the fabric, but when he found nothing, he was too scared to say so and told the king the fabric was beautiful. A few days later, the king sent another
minister, who also saw nothing, but was afraid to admit (承认) it and said the cloth was stunning (绝妙的).
The king, now believed that only smart people could see the fabric. The two tricksters showed the king the “new clothes” and dressed him, making him believe they were light (轻的) and beautiful.
The king, proud of his new clothes, walked through the streets, and his ministers and people complimented (称赞) him, pretending to see the amazing clothes. But a little boy in the crowd (人群) shouted, “The king isn’t wearing any clothes!” and everyone realized (意识到) the truth—that the king was tricked.
The king realized he had been fooled (被愚弄) and felt ashamed (羞愧的), but he also admired (钦佩) the boy for telling the truth. From that day on, the king cared more about his people and their needs than about wearing fancy clothes and he became smarter and kinder.
