The White Snake
There are many different versions of the White Snake story. Here is the most popular one.
After thousands of years of training, a white snake became a beautiful young woman. In her new form, Lady White Snake fell in love with Xu Xian, a scholar. They quickly got married.
During the Dragon Boat Festival, Lady White Snake drank realgar wine (雄黄酒). This caused her to show her true form, and it frightened Xu to death.
Lady White Snake stole a magic herb (仙草) and tried to bring her husband back to life. The monk Fahai believed that humans and monsters should never be together. He took Xu away. To bring her husband back, Lady White Snake flooded many mountains. Finally, Fahai locked her up in Leifeng Pagoda by West Lake.
Xiushe
Do you know the Chinese saying "A man who's never satisfied is like a snake trying to swallow an elephant. "? It comes from a story about Xiushe.
Xiushe is a large snake that is over one hundred metres in length. According to Shanhaijing, Xiushe once swallowed an elephant. It took the snake three years to spit out all the bones!
Huashe
Huashe has the face of a human and the body of a jackal (豺). It moves like a snake and cries like a woman or a baby. It hardly makes noise, but when it does, a great flood follows.
