The Power of Stories
Jake found a smooth, grey stone on his way home from the park. It was just a rock. But Jake decided to make it special. He held it in his hand and thought, “What if this stone could talk?”
That night, Jake sat on his bed with a notebook. He wrote: Once upon a time, a stone named Grey lay by a stream. Every hundred years, it could speak one true sentence.
His little sister, Emma, peeked into the room. “What are you doing?”
“Writing a story,” Jake said. “Want to hear?”
Emma climbed onto his bed. Jake read: “One day, a girl named Emma found the stone. The stone opened its tiny mouth and said...” Jake stopped. “What should it say?” he asked Emma.
“It should say, ‘You are brave,’ ” Emma whispered.
So Jake wrote: The stone said, “You are brave, Emma. Now go and help someone.” Emma smiled. She liked being called brave.
The next day, Jake continued. Grey the stone met a lost rabbit, a sad tree, and a cloud that forgot how to rain. Emma added ideas—she wanted the rabbit to find a carrot field, and the tree to grow apples again.
By the end of the week, the story was twelve pages long. That night, Jake read the whole story to Emma.
Jake looked at the grey stone on his desk. It didn’t look special at all. But now it held a whole world inside. That summer, Jake wrote three more stories. He learned that anyone can be a storyteller. You just need a small idea, a little time, and someone to listen.
