As Sultan's next birthday arrived, everyone in the kingdom started getting scared. On the morning of his birthday, they stayed in bed with their heads under their blankets. Luckily, most people had nothing to worry about. But two of Sultan's people, Ali and Baboo, had a lot to worry about—for they were told to visit Sultan.
“My challenge for you two is a camel race,” Sultan said. And he stopped talking for a moment to let what he had said sink in. He thought Ali and Baboo would like what they had heard. But, he wasn't getting soft in his old age. There was something he hadn't told them.
Just as Ali and Baboo started to feel good, Sultan started talking again. “The winner of the race is the person whose camel comes last!” he told them with a huge grin on his face. “The loser will get five years in prison and a tattoo of me on his chest to remind him of his failure.”
Ali and Baboo were led to the starting line of the race by two of Sultan's guards.
When Ali and Baboo were ready, they were given the signal to set off. They did so, but very, very slowly. Neither of them wanted to get ahead of the other.
The kingdom's wisest person, a woman named Shiraz, walked towards the men. She whispered something in each man's ear. As soon as she had finished speaking, each man jumped on a camel and the camels took off quickly. They rushed towards the finishing line as fast as possible. Each man was anxious to get to the finishing line first.
Someone around asked Shiraz what she had told the camel riders. “Simple,” Shiraz said. “I just told each of them to get on the other man's camel. After all, the winner is the person whose camel comes last.”
