Jingzhe, one of China’s 24 solar terms, falls on March 5th this year. In Chinese, zhe means the animals hide themselves without eating or moving and sleep during the winter. Jingzhe means many insects are waking up and the earth is coming back to life.
Jingzhe brings energy (能量) to insects. And Chinese farmers take insects seriously. Insects show farmers changes in nature and help them with their work. For example, with the sounds of insects, farmers know it is time to protect crops (粮食) from dangerous insects.
Jingzhe is a key time for spring farming. Farmers become busy and start the year’s work. As the Chinese saying goes, “The whole year’s work depends on a good start in spring.” Everyone is busy preparing for the new year’s work.
What do people do around Jingzhe? Eating pears around Jingzhe is a custom in China. As the air becomes dry, people feel their mouths becoming dry and that can cause colds or coughs.
